You can redeem points at the InterContinental brand. The InterContinental Bora Thalasso in French Polynesia is one of the prettiest properties in the world.

The InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort is on my list of aspirational InterContinental resorts. The resort is located on the side of Sn Tr mountain, looking away from Danang city and out to the sea. The resort looks like it is far away from the town.

I was drawn to the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort because of its mountainside villas. The spa treatment rooms are located along a secluded lagoon and the resort has a cute four-stop funicular. I'd wanted to stay at this resort for over five years, and finally got to stay for three nights this summer.

The InterContinental Danang began renovations while it was closed during the Pandemic. The renovations should be finished by the time this article is published, so I will not focus on them in this review. I was here for a long time.

Booking

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

There are many ways to book a room at the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort When you earn a 40 or 70 night milestone reward, you can choose to receive club lounge access at participating I hg hotels for you and a guest. If that's the case, I would recommend booking with IHG to get access to your benefits.

On some dates, the hotel's cash rate is under $400 per night. Most of the special packages that the hotel is currently offering do not allow for free cancellation.

You may be able to get a better deal if you redeem your Ihg points for your stay. If you have a flexible schedule you should be able to find award night dates that work. It costs between 66,000 and 115,000 points per night to win an award. You can get a fourth-night reward if you have an eligible ihg rewards credit card linked to your account

IHG.COM

If you book through the American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts program, you can get even more perks, such as an on-property credit. For a two-night paid stay, booking through IHG was less expensive than booking through the Fine Hotels + Resorts program.

AMEXTRAVEL.COM

I redeemed an uncapped anniversary night certificate for one night from the IHG rewards club select card, which is no longer available to new applicants and the anniversary nights are no longer uncapped. This resort doesn't charge a resort or destination fee, so I booked a two night paid stay for $960, including taxes and fees.

I rarely stay with InterContinental, but I did pay $200 for Ambassador.

Location

The InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort is about 40 minutes from the city's airport. You won't be able to eat outside of the property easily during your stay at the resort. There are no shops nearby. You're basically here to stay once you check in. You would have to take a one-hour drive each way to get to Hoi An.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

We took a ride through Grab's app from the Danang airport to the resort for about $12. If you want to leave the property, you'll have to book a private transfer or use a cab from Vinasun, the resort's approved.

RIMS.LIVE

The resort called a taxi to take us to the My An neighborhood in Danang city. It would have cost about $10 to grab.

Airline miles can be used to fly to Vietnam.

Check-in

The hotel sent me an email the day before check-in.

Screenshot of an email from the resort. INTERCONTINENTAL DANANG SUN PENINSULA RESORT

I explained that we had two reservations and that we wanted to keep the same room. We were forced to book a higher-category room for the two paid nights because of limited availability. My status as Platinum Ambassador was incorrect and I was reminded of the check-in time.

Screenshot of an email from the resort. INTERCONTINENTAL DANANG SUN PENINSULA RESORT

We arrived at the resort around 3 pm. Our names were checked against a guest list before we were allowed to enter the resort. We were led to a crowded room for check-in by a staff member. We were able to complete the check-in formality quickly because there was enough staff to handle the crowd.

A guaranteed one category room upgrade is one of the benefits of InterContinental Ambassador membership. We were upgraded to a terrace suite with an ocean view for the duration of the stay. The room type we booked for our two-night paid stay is one category above the room type I booked for the other night of our stay. The terrace suite with ocean view costs more than the panoramic ocean view room we booked because of the higher rates.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

We were not given just any terrace suite. We were assigned a terrace suite in the highest section of the property, Heaven, on the Sea, Earth, Sky and Heaven levels. After getting a quick overview of the hotel's layout on a map, a staff member took us to our room in a golf cart

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

The room

We had an excellent view over the resort from the Heaven level and were close to the restaurant where breakfast was served as well as the railway that connects all four levels. The resort usually assigns this room to Ambassador members according to one of the agents.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

There was a writing pad, lamp, and fruit plate on the desk. There was an assortment of wines, liquors and non- alcohol drinks available for purchase to the right of the desk.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

The coffee area was to the left of the desk. I like teapots in hotels and airport lounges, so I was thrilled to find a small teapot with two cups, an espresso machine and a water kettle.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

There was a large closet across from the tea and coffee area that had two doors that opened out. The closet had something inside it.

  • 12 hangers (two of which held plush InterContinental robes).
  • An iron and ironing board.
  • Two pairs of fluffy slippers.
  • A basket for the shoe cleaning service that contains a shoe horn, shoe brush and shoe mitt.
  • A beach bag with two pairs of sandals and a Vietnamese-style hat.
  • Emergency light and mosquito repellent plug-in device.
  • Safe.
  • Bags for laundry and dry cleaning.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

There were luggageracks on either side of the closet.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

The bed on the other side of the desk had lamps on both sides. The do not disturb and make up room buttons were located behind the bed. Power outlets were located under the bed. The bed was very comfortable and had a feather top.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

There was a TV across from the bed. Most of the live channels were in English. There was a window seat. Behind the window seat were shutters. You can see the balcony if you do so.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

The sliding door to the balcony was located to the right of the window seat. The lounge chairs were on the balcony. I liked sitting in one of the taller chairs around the table. The table was a great place to sit and enjoy the views.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

The agent who showed us to our room warned us to double lock the patio door because there were monkeys at the resort. The monkeys know how to open the door if it's only locked once.

The bathroom was located by the entrance. A small room with a toilet is the first thing you will see.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

The main area of the bathroom had two sinks and a lot of counter space. There was a scale under the counter, a box with a weak Valera hair dryer, and another box with amenities.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

There was a bathtub to the left of the sink. From our tub, we could see the resort. We had to top off our baths because it didn't hold water well. The overhead rain shower was next to the tub. There were small containers of Harnn Mystique on a piece of furniture next to the shower.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

There are a couple of small issues that you should be aware of. The noise can be heard from the front door. I woke up every morning as the guests left their room in the adjacent room. The resort is in a jungle environment so you may find insects in your room.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

A note about accessibility

There are no handicap accessible rooms at the InterContinental Danang.

IHG.COM

It will be difficult for guests with limited mobility to enjoy the resort. There isn't a way to get to the pool above the L_O_N_G Bar. You can still have an enjoyable stay if you are comfortable with limited stairs and riding in a golf cart.

Food and beverage

There were three restaurants and a bar at the resort that I stayed at. Room service was offered by the resort. I tried everything.

All prices in this section are before taxes. Thanks to my Diamond Ambassador status, we were able to get a 20% discount on non- alcoholic drinks and food at Citron and Barefoot.

Citron

The Club InterContinental lounge is located in the Heaven section of the resort. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner are available. The venue at the InterContinental Danang has circular tables with panoramic views that you can see on the resort website.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

On our first night, we ate dinner at Citron. The menu was divided into three categories: North, Central and South.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

I ordered the free-range chicken with mint salad from northern Vietnam for 349,000Dong as an aperitif. The salad had a light dressing and tender chicken. The salad ingredients came from the nursery. We both enjoyed the fresh bread with butter and a snack.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

I ordered pho from northern Vietnam for about 17 dollars. Our waiter told me that I could get this dish as part of the breakfast buffet the next morning, so I changed my order to duc noodles from central Vietnam for $488,000, which is $21. The noodles were good but the pork was too fat.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

At check-in, I chose the daily breakfast as my welcome amenities. We were able to get the full breakfast buffet at no extra cost. Adding on breakfast for two guests would have cost us more money.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

There are plenty of American, European, Asian and Vietnam options on the breakfast buffet. Eggs, pho and a special local dish were available at several stations.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

I found the bread, fruits and Asian options to be the best for breakfast.

La Maison 1888

The premier restaurant at the resort is La Maison 1888, which features French specialties with a Vietnamese influence. The best chef in the world was named by his peers as part of the Le Chef Magazine awards.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

There is a building next to the Tram. Three-course, four-course or five-course set menu options are available at the restaurant. The three-course set meal costs about $124. The four-course meal cost $3,599,000 and the five-course meal cost $4,299,000.

I decided to spend a lot of money at this restaurant. A server brought six small nibbles before I said I would have the three-course meal. The server described the order in which I should eat them. The soup with pea sauce and the shrimp with garlic sauce were the highlights for me.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

After the canapes, a server brought over a menu that I could choose from. The chef recommended medium-rare Wagyu beef for the three-course one. If you don't like meat, the restaurant can offer a vegetarian menu.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

My first course was pate en croute with roasted almonds, banhmi, and a Coriander Mint Sorbet. The banhmi was fresh and had a sweet sauce and shredded veggies.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

The highlight of my second course was the wagyu beef tenderloin. I usually don't eat red meat but this one was great. The sauce that was served with the tenderloin distracted me and made the beef taste worse. The croquettes were creamy and crisp on the outside.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

Multiple different desserts were part of the third course. The lemon sorbet overwhelmed the plate of fruit from Vietnam and the olives in the strawberry dessert were not expected. The flan was light and had puffed rice on top. The chocolate biscuit was very satisfying.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

Barefoot

We ate dinner at Barefoot on the last night of our stay. We showed up without a reservation, but the hostess was able to set up a table for us quickly.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

I had the vegetarian pizza for 368,000 dong and the sea bass ceviche for 329,000 dong, but they were both on the grill.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

The ceviche was too spicy for me to eat and contained a lot of sea bass instead of small pieces. When our waiter said the chef was Italian, it made sense.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

L_O_N_G Bar

The L_O_N_G bar is next to the pool. The Long Bar at Raffles Hotel in Singapore appears to have inspired this bar. The decor at L_O_N_G Bar is more colorful than at Long Bar in Singapore. L_O_N_G Bar has a pool table, huge day beds, and swinging chairs that give you a view of the beach.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

L_O_N_G Bar is open from 5 to 7 p.m. There are plenty of options to satisfy most people. If you buy two different drinks, you will get the cheaper one. If you're looking for the most alcohol for your money, the margarita is a good choice.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

If you show a fitness tracker with more than 10,000 steps for the day, you will get a free drink at the L_O_N_G bar. I had a complimentary drink on two nights of my stay because I walked a lot. One night I tried the mango smoothie and the other night I tried the carrot smoothie, both of which were in the healthy drink section.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

The L_O_N_G Bar has a good bathroom. The men's urinal has a waterfall design. If you need to check out of your room but still want to enjoy the pool, there's a shower in one stall.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

Room service

I ordered room service mid-day and had the crab cake ball appetizer for 349,000 dong, the Hoi An rice main for 449,000 dong and a soda for 640,000 dong. The staff member said it would take 40 to 45 minutes to place an order. I was surprised when a member of the staff delivered my food.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

The cooking was not rushed. The crabcakes were nicely complemented by a chili sauce. The rice was fresh and filling thanks to all the vegetables.

Amenities

Most of the buildings at the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort are small. If you want a buggy to pick you up, I prefer to walk. It's easy to get around without using buggies if you choose to.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

It's an attraction of its own. During my stay, there was never a wait for the Nam Tram, even if it was necessary to wait for it to arrive from a different station. You may need to take a buggy late at night or early in the morning because the Nam Tram doesn't run all day.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

There are two pools at the sea. The shaded garden pool area is family friendly. There is a large jacuzzi for adults in this area.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

The second pool area is located above the L_O_N_G bar and overlooks the beach. The jacuzzi area is not warm.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

There is a private beach at sea level. There are plenty of beach chairs with umbrellas and attendants that will bring water. There was a lot of free sunscreen available.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

You can borrow kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and a windsurfing board from the water sports tent for free after you fill out a form.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

An indoor gym is located in the same building as the L_O_N_G bar. There is an outdoor gym near the L_O_N_G Bar. The indoor gym has more equipment than the outdoor one, but both areas have cardiovascular and weight equipment.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

The L_O_N_G Bar and the Planet Trekkers kid's club are located in the same building.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

The architect and designer of the resort, Bill Bensley, has a gallery on the Sky level. A staff member can answer questions or help you purchase art.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

There is a relaxation pavilion on the Heaven level.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

The reception building is located on the Sea level. The reception at the spa is where you can meet for a massage or massage workshop.

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

The Lagoon Spa is located by a lagoon. Treatment huts are the blue buildings.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

A couples massage was booked by my husband and I were assigned a massage hut. The setting and massage quality made us happy we spent so much money. You can check out the spa menu.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

Select activities can be booked by calling the concierge. There is a schedule of activities at the Sea level station. To book most activities during my stay, you had to call by 4 pm the previous day.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

I booked a head, shoulders and back massage workshop and a nature workshop on my first day at the resort. Two couples attended the massage workshop, which was held in a massage hut and involved a massage therapist showing techniques and helping us try the techniques on our partners

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

A staff member used a golf cart to drive two couples around the resort. The relatively common macaque and the red-shanked douc langur were both found. It was fun to see a macaque carry a baby and two langur pups.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

On the outskirts of the resort, there are tennis courts and a soccer field. If you call the concierge, you can reserve a tennis court and even a tennis pro.

The Points Guy is KaTIE GENTER.

You might be disappointed in the internet speeds if you need to stay connected. During my stay, I was able to download, upload and ping the internet at the same time. These speeds are good for email and social media.

Service

KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

The service at the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort was great. The staff was always friendly and welcoming.

The staff seemed focused on making guests happy. The instructor was able to adapt when the other couple asked for a lesson in massaging their child. The guide for the workshop apologized to us and drove to pick up the couple that didn't show up on time. When we showed up for dinner at Barefoot without a reservation, the hostess prepared a table in less than a minute.

We were able to communicate with the staff in person. We had poor interactions with resort staff over the phone. The concierge almost hung up on me when I called to book on-site activities, and he didn't allow me to book a third as he seemed overly eager to get off the phone. We had to repeat our request multiple times before the agent realized we wanted ice.

The phone issues did not end here. Our phone rang many times and the caller hung up after a few rings or after we picked up. The agent hung up after I said hello. It was disappointing to have bad experiences over the phone since our interactions were so good.

Overall impression

I had a great time at the InterContinental Danang Sun Peninsula Resort. The InterContinental Danang is an excellent option if you're looking for luxury at a reasonable price.

I stayed at the resort so I could maximize my time there. I fell in love with the My An neighborhood of Danang when I visited the city several times. After I checked out of the InterContinental, I went back to the neighborhood.

At the InterContinental Danang, room rates in points and cash are vastly different. Adding a few nights in Danang city before or after your InterContinental stay is a good way to save money.
