The team said that the 20-year-old had died of cancer.

After graduating from high school, Phelan signed with the Phils as a free agent in 2020 and was diagnosed with cancer in April of 2022.

In a statement, the director of player development for the Phils said that the family was very sad by the death of the player. Everyone around him was influenced by the presence ofCorey. His love for his family and his faith were more important than his passion for baseball. His teammates and staff provided emotional support throughout his battle with cancer, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family.
