The new "Allegris" product generation includes the biggest ever investment in the premium cabin experience. A new product is included.

Lufthansa’s new first class suite

The suites in first class will have high ceilings and can be closed for privacy. The seat can be turned into a bed, as it is described. The suites will have a wardrobe.

The new privacy dividers allow customers to change into their pajamas in their suite, which is kind of funny, but I suppose it is intended to explain just how private the suite will be. One person will be sitting across from their travel partner on an ottoman at the large dining table. There will be entertainment screens in the full width of the suite.

Details are very limited at this time. As of the beginning of 2023, we are told to expect more information about the suite and other innovations.

The new first class will debut on the A350

A new first class product is going to be introduced by the airline. The announcement doesn't mention first class on select A350-900s. There are at least 10 A350-900s that will feature first class.

First class is available on the 19 Boeing 747-8s that are based in Germany. The airline has brought back some of the A340-600s that are based in Germany. First class is what these were brought back for. It is expected that some of the A380s will be temporarily based in Germany.

The layout of the new first class on the A350 is intriguing to me.

  • These suites look rather spacious given the fuselage width of the A350, so while I’d generally assume the configuration would be 1-2-1, will Lufthansa be going for a 1-1-1 configuration, or how can the airline have such wide seats (along with a wardrobe) while still having four seats per row?
  • Will Lufthansa have one or two rows of first class? In other words, will there be three to four or six to eight seats in the cabin?

The new first class product will be retrofitted with the Boeing 747-8s. I can't help but wonder what this will mean for first class capacity, as I can't imagine that Lufthansa can fit eight of the new first class seats in the nose of the jumbo jet.

Will 747-8s get Lufthansa’s new first class?

What are the implications for award tickets?

I wonder what this means for the availability of first class awards. Forgetting cabin capacity for a moment, and that the seats are more likely to sell, keep in mind that Lufthansa makes first class award seats available to partner frequent flyers at most 15 days in advance.

SWISS first class is not bookable with partner miles, even though it is part of the Lufthansa Group. I am worried that the introduction of a new first class may cause the airline to eliminate partner first class award availability.

If that were the case, partner award redemptions would be off limits. Adding in American eliminating first class and British Airways reducing its first class footprint may lead to the end of first class awards in the US and Europe.

Will Lufthansa first class awards be off limits eventually?

Bottom line

For the first time, a first class product will include suites with doors. This appears to be a huge improvement over the current first class product. We are told to expect more information in the early years of the 21st century.

The product should debut on the A350-900 as of mid-2023, and eventually the Boeing 747-8s will be fitted with these cabins. What first class capacity will these planes have? Implications may not be good for first class award availability.

What do you think of the new class?
