Commanders prevail after Mooney's catch ruled short of a TD (0:41)

The Commanders walk out with a close win on the road after the ball was just short of the goal line. There is a 0:41

11:21 PM ET

On a windy Thursday night in Chicago, the Washington Commanders beat the Bears 12-7.

Washington Commanders

The Commanders are not going to apologize for their looks. They just needed to win. They didn't do anything else.

The win over the Bears may or may not point the way to a better season. There is still a lot of work to be done after this victory. There were 27 penalties in three games. In the last four games, they have scored 47 points.

It allows the Commanders to exhale after four straight losses. Winning gives a needed salve for a franchise that seems to bring a new issue every week.

Washington punted after failing to convert on third down for the second time. It turned out to be a good decision. Velus Jones Jr. fumbled the punt and the ball was recovered by CHRISTIAN HOLMES. Brian Robinson scored two runs for Washington. Robinson gained five yards on his first carry, thanks to a block by the rookies.

There is a lack of mobility in the quarterback. It is not just on the field. He has trouble extending plays. He was run on what looked like a power sweep in the red zone by Washington. It might have been a problem for him to pass on a windy night because he hurt his hand and had a bad shoulder. He had two passes that were dropped by Samuel and one that would have put them in the Bears' 10-yard line. He needs to play better if this offense is going to generate points.

Montez Sweat had no sacks in the first four games of the season. He needed a little more help from the coverage to complete the play. In the past two games, he has recorded three sacks and eight quarterback hits. Justin Fields was harassed by Sweat many times. Sweat needs to keep being a force if Washington is going to have any chance of making noise this season.

The third downs trend is troubling. In their last four games, Washington has converted just 14-of-54 third downs, a function of an immobile quarterback and an offense seemingly unprepared to handle a lot of pressure. Washington likes to run crossers, so teams take away that option, but they also know that Wentz will struggle. Washington needs to give more assistance to Wentz.

Washington's 88 yards in the first half were the lowest by a team in the first half this season.

The Packers will play the next game. There was an event on October 23th.

Chicago Bears

The Bears scored less than 10 points in two of their three games this season. Chicago left 14 points on the board in the first half and couldn't finish the job when Fields had the offense in position to win the game.

On that play, Fields had a ball in his hand, but he fumbled it. While running back David Montgomery was open in the flat on the other side of the field, he was Fields' fifth read on the play, which the quarterback intimated there would have been a 5% chance that he got back to him after going through his progressions.

There are the same issues in different games. There is more to that than quarterback play.

Fields was put under pressure 18 times on Thursday, tying for his most in a game in his career. Fields has had to deal with more pressure on his dropbacks this season. It's the highest rate of pressure a quarterback has faced in his first six games.

Fields' strong second half performance in Minnesota didn't carry over to Thursday night. The Bears went inside the red zone for the third time. On second-and- 3 at the 3-yard line, Fields threw the ball to the tight end who was open in the end zone. According to Next Gen Stats, the player had over four yards of separation. One more trip inside the red zone was set up by a 39-yard scramble by Fields in the fourth quarter that ended with the ball being thrown away. Three trips inside the red zone without a score ties the most in a game since 2000.

Dante pettis will return punts. All of Chicago's return duties have been handled by Velus Jones Jr. A fumbled punt return that allowed Washington to recover the ball and score two plays later will force the Bears to rethink who they have deep on punt.

The silver lining is that the Bears don't play again until October 24, which gives them 10 days to recover before their game against the Pats. There was a shuffle up front in the third quarter after guards Lucas Patrick and Teven Jenkins left the game with injuries. Fields took four sacks and was hit over 11 times. He was slow to get up after a few blows to the ribs and appeared to have injured his left shoulder.

The pass rush in Chicago has been non existent. The Bears had a 28% pressure rate, a 5% sack rate and only eight sacks entering Week 6. The Commanders' QB was only pressured on four of his 25 dropbacks, despite the fact that they had sacked him three times.

Fields has taken at least 2 sacks in every game this season and in 14 straight games, which is the longest active streak in the league.

The next game is at the New England team. There was an event on October 24th.
