'Community is hurting,' mayor says after officer is killed

There is a city in Mississippi called Greenville. Several people were injured by gunfire and a police officer was killed in the city where she grew up.

Detective Myiesha Stewart was killed as she and other officers responded to a call.

The mayor and law enforcement officers were outside City Hall.

Stewart is survived by her family.

A suspect is in custody and hospitalized, according to Tindell. The suspect was not identified by the Commissioner. Tindell gave no information about the circumstances of Stewart's death.

The Arkansas state line is about 120 miles north of Jackson, Mississippi. The shooting happened at the intersection of U.S. Highway 82 and Mississippi Highway 1.

Stewart attended high school in the area. She majors in criminal justice at Delta State University.

Simmons said that she was one who showed courage. She put fear aside to help another person.

All shootings involving officers in the state of Mississippi are being examined by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.

The governor wrote that he was sad by the loss of the detective. Please pray for her family, friends, and the entire police department.
