There will soon be ads on the streaming service.

The streaming giant has a lower-priced plan with ads. Basic with Ads will be available in the US in November. The details of the announcement can be found here.

  • Basic with ads will be offered in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US.

  • Current plans won't be affected. Basic with ads is an add-on to the existing ad-free Basic, Standard, and Premium plans.

It has been expected for a long time. Reed Hastings, co-CEO, said the company would be looking into this as an option, and a few months later, Ted Sarandos, co-CEO, said an ad-supported tier was happening.

The company is looking for ways to target and retain customers. The company lost a million subscribers in the year. Increasing its subscription prices and cracking down on password-sharing has put a limit on the number of subscribers it will allow. The streaming landscape is incredibly cutthroat, with heavy-hitters like Prime Video and Disney+ offering diverse streaming options and cheaper or similar subscription prices

It's clear that the subscription-based model is unsustainable, even though it's the last bastion of ad-free streaming. Will ad revenue help the streaming service or will it be the end of it?
