Basic with ads will be offered in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK and the US.
Current plans won't be affected. Basic with ads is an add-on to the existing ad-free Basic, Standard, and Premium plans.
It has been expected for a long time. Reed Hastings, co-CEO, said the company would be looking into this as an option, and a few months later, Ted Sarandos, co-CEO, said an ad-supported tier was happening.
The company is looking for ways to target and retain customers. The company lost a million subscribers in the year. Increasing its subscription prices and cracking down on password-sharing has put a limit on the number of subscribers it will allow.
