Mark Zuckerberg made a big announcement at the Meta's Connect conference on Tuesday, saying that the avatars in the company's virtual reality app will be getting legs soon. In order to demonstrate this breakthrough technical achievement, the digital avatar lifted each leg in the air, and then did a jump, while the other one kicked into the air.
It might have been for a show. Ian Hamilton said that the segment featured animations created from motion capture and was meant to give a preview of what to come. I think what we saw was an artist's interpretation of what the legs will look like.
Maybe that is a little dramatic. This was easy to anticipate. Jay Peters warned me that the pre- recorded video wasn't necessarily an accurate representation of the announcement. If Meta is trying to say that it didn't show any footage of what legs will look like, that's a bit worrying. The feature is supposed to arrive soon, but we can't see it yet. I don't know if I should buy a Quest Pro if I don't know if it will allow me to do a dance during a virtual meeting.
We will have to wait until the legs launch to see how Meta's predictions stack up against the real thing. Even if all it really proved was that computers are capable of rendering legs, we will just get a kick out of it.
