A Brazilian court fined Apple 100 million reais for selling phones without a charger. A decision in a lawsuit brought about by the Brazilian association of borrowers, consumers, and taxpayers (AMBCC) was given by the Sao Paolo state court.
In order to cut down on carbon emissions, Apple stopped selling chargers for its phones. The company argues that many of its customers already have a place to buy a chargers, and that it still sells them on a stand alone basis.
The court didn't like Apple's explanation of the environment. Under the justification of a "green initiative," the defendants impose on the consumer a requirement to purchase a previously supplied accessory.
According to a Brazilian news site, Apple is going to give all Brazilians who purchased their products after October 13, 2020, a free phone with a charge. When the iPhone 12 models were launched in 2020, Apple stopped providing charging ports. In most countries, Apple doesn't offer Ear Pods or a power accessory for the phone.
The Brazilian Justice Ministry fined Apple $2.34 million in September for selling an incomplete product and not having a chargers for its phones.
As it is appealing the ruling, Apple has not complied with the order.
