Mickelson: LIV Golf trending up, PGA trending down (1:36)

Phil talks about the evolution of LIV Golf. There is a time and a place for it.

1:30 PM ET

In Saudi Arabia for the first time since his comments about the source of LIV Golf's funding, Phil Mickelson said he was glad he was on the winning side and that he saw the PGA Tour going in a different direction.

The best players in the world for the past 20 to 30 years won't be the case again, according to Phil.

He came out strong in the news conference for the golf event.

You have to choose a side. Do you think the other side will succeed? "I think I'm on the winning side of how things are going to evolve and shape in the coming years for professional golf."

There are many of the best players in the world on the PGA Tour and we play against them. Both sides are going to change and evolve until both of them sit down and talk. I love the side that I'm on and I see that LIV Golf is going upwards.

The Saudis were referred to as "scary motherf---ers to get involved with" by the six-time major champion in an interview.

They have a terrible record on human rights. People are put to death for being gay. I don't understand why I would consider it. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change how the tour is run.

Two weeks after playing in the Saudi International at Royal Greens, the interview was published.

After the interview, he said his comments were off the record.

He denied doing an interview with Alan Shipnuck. My experience with everyone associated with LIV Golf has been positive and I have the utmost respect for them.

Some of the world's greatest athletes were signed to contracts that were said to be in the $125 million range.

The majority of the players outside the top 25 are outside of the world ranking because LIV Golf hasn't gotten world ranking points.

The best players in the world will play 15 times a year for $20 million in prize money in a new schedule that will start in 2023.

These are some of the things he wanted to change. He and other members who signed with LIV Golf have been suspended by the PGA Tour pending the outcome of a lawsuit.

Each week, LIV Golf plays for $25 million. There is an $18 million bonus for winning the individual points race.

It was his comments in February that slowed the first year of LIV Golf.

The PGA Tour and European tour want no part of anyone who has signed to play with LIV Golf.

Both the U.S. Open and British Open allowed LIV Golf players to compete if they were eligible. Norman was told not to take part in the 150th anniversary celebrations at St. Andrew's.

Saudi Arabia's wealth fund invests in golf, and it's very lucky, according to Phil. It has invested $300 million in the Asian Tour.

The United States and the UK are not in favor of this. LIV Golf is appreciated all over the world. Eventually they will be willing to accept it.

One year after becoming the oldest major winner in golf history, Phil Mickelson signed with LIV Golf.

He has only one top 10 in six appearances with LIV Golf, tying for eighth outside Chicago.

He claims that LIV Golf made him excited to compete.

The experience is something I enjoy. They treat us well. He said he loves the way they involve him and listen to him. It's so diverse. The golf club is leading. Whether it's wearing shorts, whether it's other aspects of professional golf that are going to change and evolve, those positions will be lead by LIV.
