Fossil is launching its first Wear OS 3 watch, the Gen 6 wellness edition. Unfortunately, this watch doesn't have the new W5 Plus platform, but it will introduce a new mobile app for health and fitness tracking. The Gen 6 wellness edition will be available for $299 on October 17th.
The Gen 6 wellness edition is similar to a Fossil device. It comes in a 44mm case with a 1.28-inch always-on display and three colors: black, silver, or rose gold. It will be powered by the last-gen Snapdragon Wear 4100 Plus chip, which has 1 gigabyte of RAM and 8 gigabyte of onboard storage. It is the same as the standard Gen 6.
Wear OS 3 is the big kahuna when it comes to the wellness edition. It is only available on the Montblanc Summit 3 and the Pixel Watch. Fossil has made most of the Wear OS watches in recent years under its various brands, so it is likely we will see more Wear OS 3 options in the coming months. It means a new watch navigation andUI that is similar to what we have seen on Montblanc Summit 3. The Fossil Smartwatches app was launched with the Gen 6 hybrid earlier this summer.
There will be a new health feature on the wellness edition.
Even though the official image suggests that the assistant will be available, it is not certain if it will be. The image is of a fossil.
Wear OS 3 has a better selection of third party apps in the Play Store. Fossil highlighted apps in its press release. The Gen 6 was introduced earlier this year with the addition ofAlexa. According to the website, it doesn't appear that the wellness edition will have an assistant. Since Fossil sent us official images of the watch that clearly depicts Google Assistant, that omission was mirrored on the other two watches. We reached out to Fossil to make sure.
Fossil watches get a boost in the health and fitness tracking department with the new wellness app. Automatic workout detection using VO2 max, improved sleep tracking, and continuous heart rate monitoring outside of workouts are included. Fossil has been a bit more hamstrung by Wear OS 2 and older chips than many other watches. Even if Fossil doesn't have the latest chip, Wear OS 3 allows it to catch up in a meaningful way.
This isn't a new flagship lineup so much as a refreshed Gen 6. It looks like we will have to wait a bit longer before we see the Gen 7 lineup. It is not surprising that that is mildlyDisappointing. The budget Gen 5E and Gen 5LTE were launched when Fossil transitioned from the 3100-powered Gen 5 to the 4100-powered Gen 6.
When Wear OS 3 upgrades to 4100-powered Fossil watches will start rolling out is what Fossil says. The Skagen Falster Gen 6 is also included. We tried to confirm the truth but didn't get a reply. The wait for the upgrade is almost over now that the Pixel watch is on the market. The fall has been full of Wear OS 3 news, and it doesn't seem like it will stop anytime soon.
