Carlos Correa told El Nuevo Da newspaper that he will opt out of his contract with the Minnesota Twins and become a free agent.
The news comes as a bit of a surprise, since it was reported on May 18 that there was an industry assumption that if he ended the season on a high note, he would opt out of his contract.
He signed a three-year, $105.3 million contract with the Twins as a free agent.
The Twins finished third in the division. They didn't make the playoffs this season.
Jon Heyman of the MLB Network reported that the 28-year-old was looking for a deal worth $330 million-$350 million in free agency. He might be looking for the same type of contract this time.
The Houston Astros selected him firstoverall in the 2012 draft. After making his MLB debut in 2015, he slashed.279/.345/.512 with 22 home runs, 68 runs, and 14 stolen bases in 99 games, and was named the MLB's Most Valuable Player.
