New York Attorney General Letitia James asked a state court to bar the Trump Organization from continuing activities that allegedly constitute fraud while her lawsuit against the company progresses, which would impose consequences on former President Donald Trump and his business more quickly than waiting for a final judgment in the case.
James asked the court to issue an injunction that would prohibit the Trump Organization from submitting statements of financial condition or other asset disclosures if they did not adequately disclose how those assets were valued.

After Trump's former attorney Michael Cohen testified to Congress that the president had lied about the value of his assets, James opened a civil investigation into the Trump Organization. The lawsuit accuses the Trump Organization of more than 200 false and misleading valuations of assets, including the Mar-A-Lago estate in Florida and Trump Tower. According to the complaint, the fraudulent documents were used to inflate Trump's own net worth and were approved by Mr. Trump himself. According to the AG's office, James interviewed more than 65 witnesses, including Eric Trump, Donald Trump, Jr., and the former president, who invoked his Fifth Amendment rights.
