According to a report from the Los Angeles Times, digital license plates have become legal for all cars in California after a trial with a small group of drivers. Why would anyone want a license plate that wasn't real? Users can change the messaging at the bottom of their plates through a phone app. The only company authorized to sell digital license plates in California is Reviver. The license plates are battery powered or hard wired. The 50,000-mile battery life is what the battery-powered option has. Gizmodo has yet to try out the app, but it does include automatic registration and renewal, location services, and trip monitoring. There are some recurring costs for a digital license plate. During the trial period, the plates cost $700 with a $7 monthly fee. If you want the battery-powered option, you have to pay $20 per month for 2 years or $215 per year for 4 years. The hard-wired version costs between $25 and $275 per year for four years, and is only available to commercial businesses.
You can get the battery-powered plate professionally installed for less than $100 or the hard-wired plate for $150. They can be installed in five minutes, according to the company.
The metal license plate is a 19th century feature of 21st century life according to a co- founder of Reviver.

When the battery dies and you are pulled over by a cop who wants to take it out of you, what happens? If you can swing it, you might want to get the hard wired version. There are many advantages to an old-fashioned metal plate. At least it doesn't need a battery.
