It can be difficult to plan a fully unplugged vacation. There are properties that feel remote enough to allow guests to leave the grid. Here are cabins and lodges that provide self-recharging, from being far from major roads to not having steady wi-fi.

Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge – Alaska

It takes a boat ride from Seward to reach the lodge. Between a pebble beach and a quiet lagoon lies the main lodge and eight-guest cabin property.

Emergency communication access is available in case of a serious issue and the cabins are powered by propane generators. Guests can learn more about the area's marine life from on-staff biologists.

There are national parks in Alaska.

Osprey Cabin in Lake Metigoshe State Park – North Dakota

There are two ways to get to the cabin in this state park, a 2-mile hike or a 1.5 mile canoe ride. In a rural way, it is retro. It can sleep up to six people with two full beds and two twin beds, a wood-burning stove, and a lantern with propane cylinders.

The hard part is that a vault toilet is available on site, but water has to be packed in. Hikers and mountain bikers can enjoy more than eight miles of trails open to them.

State parks are better than national parks.

Glamping Getaway Goblin Valley Yurts – Utah

Two heated and cooled gypsies blend in with the park's outer-space looking rock formations. The tan-colored yurts have a porch, living area, a single bed, and a double bed.

The yurts don't have electricity, so guests should bring a flashlight and candles. The certified dark sky park will keep visitors busy as they wander down into the Valley of Goblins.

Taos Goji Eco-Lodge – New Mexico

There are forest views and previous guests at this eco-lodge that is nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The outhouse built by Aldous Huxley is still intact at the site.

They are heated by a wood fire stove, wi-fi is spotty, and cellular service is not very good. The eco-lodge cultivates organic goji berries, fruits and vegetables, as well as raising free-range chickens, goats and alpacas.

Timberlock – New York

This camp-style retreat within New York State's Adirondacks region provides a nostalgic experience for those who fondly remember spending their summers away from home.

There are rustic cabins ranging in size from small to extra large and with views of Indian Lake's shoreline. The cabins don't have electricity. It's not a big deal if you don't have wi-fi or TV because propane and a wood stove help out with cold nights.

Kayaking, canoeing and other waterside activities keep visitors busy along with options for biking or playing tennis.

Historic parks and monuments in New York are our favorites.

Pioneer Cabins in Kumbrabow State Forest – West Virginia

The West Virginian state park is located on top of Rich Mountain and offers the chance to stay in one of six pioneer cabins. These rustic gems will transport guests far back in time, but they have modern-day conveniences. There are gas lights and gas fridges in the cabins. The need for a restroom is fulfilled by the outside toilets at the central bathhouse.

There are nine of the most remote spots in the world.

Appalachian Mountain Club Maine Wilderness Lodges – Maine

A collection of lodges along with a trail system provide an off-the-beaten-path feeling. In the 19th century, the pondside Chairback Lodge & Cabins were a private camp with four cabins with private bathroom and eight shoreline cabins with wood stove and gas lamps.

There are nine private cabins with a combo of double and bunk beds, a porch, a wood stove, and gas lamps, and dogs can camp out here. There are five hilltop cabins and four waterfront cabins with electric lighting and a wood stove.

There are cabins to rent in the Northeast.

Len Foote Hike Inn – Georgia

You can reach the inn by hiking to Amicalola Falls. Cell phones, radios, and electronic devices are not allowed in the park, but the visitor center can become an emergency contact. There are 20 bedrooms in its four main buildings, with fans or heating, bunkbeds, furnished linens, and ample lighting.

Breakfast and dinner are served inside the dining hall. After hiking, hang out in the Sunrise Room and take a bath. The inn is one of the gateways to the trail.
