Apple won't give recently announced employee perks to workers at a Maryland store who have unionized, according to a new report. The unionized employees at the Apple Store in Maryland won't be getting the additional funds for education and new health care features that Apple is offering.

In anti-union messaging sent out in May, Apple's head of retail warned employees that the store needed to negotiate benefits with the union.

She said at the time that they have a relationship that is open and collaborative. If a store is represented by a union, it could change in a big way.

The first Apple retail location in the United States to unionize was in June of this year. Apple's decision to not give perks to the store in Towson could deter other stores from trying to unionize, but it could also lead to more worker upset, according to the report. Starbucks has exclusive benefits at non-union stores.

In Connecticut, New York, Georgia, Washington, and New Jersey, Apple employees have access to a health care plan that waives co-pays for Apple-approved doctors.

Apple has been trying to improve benefits for retail workers. In February, Apple announced more paid sick days, and in June, the company agreed to make employee schedules more flexible to prevent overworking.

Formal negotiations with Apple are set to begin soon, as the store is represented by a union.
