The Dallas Cowboys quarterback is expected to miss his fifth game in a row Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles because of his thumb surgery.
McCarthy said that Rush would start the game against the Eagles.
McCarthy said that after Wednesday's practice, the quarterback will throw to the receiver. He will go through the quarterback school, but will not participate in any of the practices.
McCarthy doesn't think it's a good idea for Prescott to wear a splint for protection.
During the open portion of practice, the quarterback did not throw a pass with his right hand and did not take many snaps from center. He picked up his helmet with his right hand and his passes were left-handed.
McCarthy thinks we're still in the rehabilitation phase. I think that's when we have our conversation once he clears this phase.
The Cowboys opened their season with a loss to the Buccaneers. Jerry Jones said there was hope that the quarterback could return within four weeks, but he didn't put him on injured reserve. He had a plate inserted into his thumb and it took between four and six weeks for him to come back.
McCarthy wants the starter to have a full week of work before he returns. He wouldn't get into the idea of having Rush's backup in case of an injury.
The Cowboys have won four in a row and McCarthy doesn't think they would have changed their path if the record had been different.
McCarthy said that you have to trust the process. The season is 17 games. I immediately responded to that. You have to make sure that he's right for the long haul even though he didn't want to hear it.
I'm not saying we're being conservative because that doesn't line up with him and the way he prepares to play. This is following the medical timelines. He's doing everything he can to make sure you're ready. I don't believe it would have changed.
