Dennis Tito was the first person to pay for his own ride into space when he spent a week on the International Space Station.

He always had a desire to return to space and fly to the moon. Tito didn't have confidence in any of the available vehicles for such a mission.

About a year and a half ago he and his wife Akiko visited the headquarters of the company. It didn't take long for the lunar idea to come up after the tour. Would he be interested in riding on the spaceship for the trip to the moon?

Dennis Tito said this week during an interview with Ars that they knew right away.

Akiko said she wanted to go. Both of us wanted to leave.

Three missions and counting

The public announcement of the purchase of two seats on the second circumlunar flight was made by the Titos. There are ten other seats that are not sold out. He didn't want to reveal the price he paid.

The manifest of private human spaceflights is now three. The first human flight around the Moon will be carried out by Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa. The second circumlunar mission will come after.

The first human landing on the Moon will be part of the Artemis program, but for now, NASA astronauts will launch on a separate rocket and rendezvous with Starship in lunar orbit to go down to the moon. NASA hasn't said if they'll launch astronauts from Earth or land them on the other side of the world.

Waiting on Starship

The future of these missions depends on the development of the Starship vehicle, which may make a debut test flight in the coming months. The launch system will fly dozens of uncrewed missions before humans climb on board. No crew vehicle has ever done a propulsive landing back on Earth, and there is no backup should it fail.

He is willing to wait. He and Akiko underwent three days of cognitive tests after they signed a contract. He said that it turned out that there weren't any problems. Both of us flew through the air.

He admitted that it could be a factor. William Shatner was the oldest person to go to space when he flew on Blue Origin's New Shepard flight. This was just a suborbital hop. John Glenn spent more than a week on the space shuttle in 1998 at the age of 77.

Starship is not likely to be ready for crewed circumlunar trips before the year 2025. We're willing to wait for as long as we're healthy, according to the man. It's not possible to force the timelines. When it occurs, it will happen.

During his visit to the Star base facility in South Texas, he made an announcement. He said the launch and test facilities are amazing and that he has been following the progress of development on the video sharing site.

“Nothing happened”

Six other people launched on a Soyuz through the year 2009, for up to $30 million a trip. There was no space tourism for a long time. The price of a private spaceflight trip was going to come down to $1 million per person, according to the man.

Nothing happened after it dried up. Hundreds of people would go into space. It wasn't good. With the development of reusability, I believe it is finally happening. We are just happy as can be.

He thinks that the vehicle could be the one that opens access to more people. There is a limit on the number of people that can go on the first lunar mission. He said that the key will be the ability of the company to spread out the costs.

Some people will have to pay higher prices and take a bigger risk in order to get that. That's where Maezawa and the others came in.
