For Scotland and Wales in the play-offs for the Women's World Cup, it was a close call, but for the Republic of Ireland it was a historic night.

Ireland secured their place in a major tournament for the first time, thanks to a goal by amber brett in the win over Scotland.

The Scots missed out on a chance to qualify for the World Cup two years later after they lost to the Czech Republic.

Wales' hopes of reaching a first major tournament were ended in Switzerland, who scored a winner in the dying seconds of extra time to claim a win and a place in Australia and New Zealand.

Portugal won the third play-off final 4-1, but it wasn't enough to get them into the World Cup.

Portugal will play in the inter-Confederation play-offs in February, as Switzerland and Ireland have superior qualifications.

Who else has qualified in Europe?

Nine teams qualified for the World Cup by topping their groups. They won 10 games and scored 80 goals in Group D.

The Lionesses are joined by two-time World Cup winners Germany, as well as runners-up the Netherlands and Norway.

Automatic qualification was gained by France, Sweden, Spain and Italy.

The Republic of Ireland and Switzerland have joined the European teams.

The draw to determine the groups for the World Cup will take place on October 22nd, and it will also determine if a team will be based in Australia or New Zealand.

What is the inter-confederation play-off?

The final three teams of the tournament will be decided in New Zealand.

Two of three teams and one of four are to be played as knockout competition.

In the two three-team groups, the winner of the semi-final between the other two teams will go straight to the final.

Portugal will be competing with Chinese Taipei, Thailand, and other countries.
