Angela Lansbury

DameAngela Lansbury, a musical performer who went from stage to screen in shows like Sweeney Todd as Mrs. Lovett, has died. Her family said in a statement that her mother died peacefully in her sleep in Los Angeles at 1 a.m. on Tuesday, October 11th, just five days shy of her 97th birthday.

Many generations found comfort in Lansbury's voice and presence. The London-born talent is one that will be missed for her impact on the big and small screen throughout her nearly life-long career, which started when she was just 17 in pictures like Gaslight. She provided the vocals for the film's title song, which is an instant fairytale classic.

Murder, She Wrote ran from the late 80s to the mid 90s and was a hit with her fans. Lansbury reprised her role as Aunt March in a PBS adapatation. She appeared in the Nanny McPhee movies.

Lansbury won five Tonys, including for her role in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in 1979. She was nominated for three Academy Awards for her work in film and received an award for her lifetime achievement in film. Her performance on Murder, She Wrote earned her four Golden Globe wins. She was nominated for an album of the year award for Beauty and the Beast.
