Lansbury won a Tony Award five times. The family of Dame Angela Lansbury said in a statement that she died peacefully in her sleep at home in Los Angeles at 1 am on Tuesday, October 11th, just five days shy of her 97th birthday.

An entertainment icon who has created some of cinema's most memorable characters, inspiring generations of actors, she was the recipient of an Academy Award for her work. She was nominated for 12 awards, including best lead actress in a drama series.
Lansbury was just 20 years old when she was cast as the young maid in the movie Gaslight.
In the 1950s, Lansbury guest starred in TV series like Robert Montgomery Presents, The Ford Television Theatre, and Celebrity Playhouse.
Lansbury made her Broadway debut in 1957 and went on to win a Tony Award for her role in Sweeney Todd. It was her role in Murder, She Wrote from 1984 to 1996 that made her a pop culture icon and earned her the record for the most Golden Globe nominations.
Miss Eglantine Price in Bedknobs and Broomsticks was one of the roles Lansbury played.
Lansbury is survived by her three children, as well as her brother, producer, and three grandsons. Peter Shaw took her life.
