The hometown hub of United Airlines and a major hub for American Airlines are both in Chicago, but that doesn't mean that Delta isn't investing in the city.

Delta unveiled its newest Sky Club at Terminal 5 in Chicago on Tuesday. Delta invested $50 million in the renovation and expansion of T5 which included the new lounge and gates. Delta is moving out of its home in Terminal 2's E concourse on Wednesday to make way for United and Alaska Airlines.

The Sky Club's previous Chicago location could hold up to 200 travelers, but the new lounge will hold nearly 400. It will be great news for Sky Club customers. It is the first Sky Club to allow boarding from inside the lounge.

Delta's continued investment in premium experiences is reflected in the lounge at O'Hare. It has food and drink options that are enough for a full meal. Sky Club Delta has opened clubs at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Tokyo Haneda Airport.

The first look tour at Delta's new home in Chicago was given toTPG on Tuesday.

A permanent space

All of the gates at Terminal 5 used to be owned and managed by the City of Chicago. Delta will have permanent ticket counter space and will always use the same gates.

In-lounge boarding

The Chicago O'Hare Sky Club is the first in the world to allow passengers to board flights directly from the lounge.

Two gates can be used for this type of boarding.

Delta will use gate M11, which is located at the airline's New York hub.

There are hints that the gate is in the Sky Club, such as a boarding pass reader and a display screen that shows flight information.

What is the reason for LaGuardia? Claude Roussel, Delta's managing director for Sky Clubs, said there's a strong business connection to New York. Delta is competing against United and American.

Delta's partners that operate from T5 will be able to use gate M14 on the opposite side of the lounge.

The lounge design was influenced by the fact that Delta is under the same roof as its international partners.

If it was for a domestic market, the lounge wouldn't have showers. The lounge at ORD does not have showers.

Warm and inviting seating

The lounge has different areas to sit in.

The types of seating Delta chooses is based on who uses the lounge the most. Families prefer communal seating while business travelers prefer solo seating.

Delta's largest club shines in its debut.

There are individual seats, couches, high-top tables and swivel chairs that can be pointed directly at the window at the new ORD club.

The goal is always to bring the city back.

Bottom line

The importance of this key business market to the Atlanta-based carrier is demonstrated by Delta's massive investment at O' Hare. If you saw the Sky Club opening on Wednesday, you wouldn't know that ORD is 14th in daily departures for Delta stations. The space is warm and inviting, and has better amenities than any United Club or Admirals Club that currently exists at ORD.

The challenge of managing overcrowding in the new lounge will be faced by Delta. Premium cabin passengers and SkyTeam elites who fly on Delta's partner airlines will now be able to use the larger space.

Delta's new space is a big treat for its loyal passengers, even though it isn't opening an ORD hub soon.
