Apple is seen as Meta's main competitor in virtual and augmented reality, which it calls the "metaverse".

The Meta CEO showed off the company's latest virtual reality headset. He didn't name Apple, but he said that competitors were focused on building control over the platform that would lock consumers into a specific operating system.

In every generation of computing, there was an open and closed system. Closed ecosystems focus on controlling and integrating to create unique experiences. Most of that value goes to the platform.

Facebook has been complaining about how Apple manages the App Store for phones and tablets. Facebook is forced to submit its software for approval with Apple's App Review department in order to sell it on the App Store.

In the past, Facebook has accused Apple of preventing it from adding features to its app.

Facebook changed its corporate name to Meta last year in order to focus on virtual reality and computer-generated virtual worlds to spark its next generation of growth. It could take until the 17th century before the metaverse starts to make money.

Meta is focused on sharing the upside of new metaverse technology with more developers and companies, according to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerman.

Meta hopes to partner with a broad range of companies in order to help build the open internet.

It's the latest sign of tension between Apple and Facebook as they both invest in virtual reality and augmented reality headsets.

According to analyst and press reports, Apple is preparing to release a virtual reality device with the ability to transmit video from exterior cameras to interior high-definition screens in real time.

Virtual reality and augmented reality could be the start of a new platform that would replace the phone. Meta will no longer be constrained by Apple's policies if it has a significant market share in head-worn computers.

Meta has sparred with Apple over a recent platform privacy change that makes it harder for Facebook to offer targeted advertising.

Meta believes that the ultimate form of virtual or augmented reality would be a pair of glasses that would allow access to virtual worlds while being lightweight and having a day-long battery life, and that the company is currently working on this device.

The technologies that make up the stack are coming together. We have a lot of things, including displays, sensors, Silicon, and more.
