In September, as part of a civil lawsuit regarding the misuse of some $77 million of welfare funds in Mississippi, text messages were released showing that Favre was involved.

On Tuesday, he said that he had tried to help his alma mater USM, a public Mississippi state university, and that his goal was and always would be to improve the athletic facilities at his university.

The Hall of Famer did not reply immediately.

The story is evolving.
