Columbus Day, now known as Indigenous Peoples' Day, in recognition of the lives lost due to explorers like Christopher Columbus, is as good a day as any to argue about Musk.

Chris Combs, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at The University of Texas at San Antonio, decided to compare Musk and the man of the day.

"Elon Musk was as important to space flight as Christopher Columbus was to America," he said.

Horse's Mouth

It is guaranteed to draw the ire of the ardent defenders of both Musk and Columbus if they are compared to each other. Some interesting (and heated) discussions have been generated by the tweet.

Sid Chambers, an engineer with the company, asked if the tweetyielded the expected cloutpoints.

Ars Technica senior space editor and Musk biographer Eric Berger looked at the claim with suspicion.

The professor of engineering at the University of Texas, San Antonio gave a hot take.

He said that Elon is a controversial figure on the internet. It's silly to say that the space company has not changed spaceflight. The industry is racing against time. The man created the company. The company was disrupted by him. He continues to run it today.

New World

It wouldn't be out of place to downplay the many achievements of the company. That was just one of many questions at hand. What should be asked is whether the credit for those advances should be given to Musk or his team of engineers and craftsmen.

If Musk's vision is central to the spacefaring company's success as his advocates claim, there's an interesting discussion to be had. We would be lying if we said watching those arguments was not amusing.
