Women's World Cup qualifiers: How they work

Scotland and Wales qualified for the finals of the Women's World Cup play-offs with victories on Thursday.

Scotland and Wales beat Austria and Bosnia-Herzegovina, respectively, in the semifinals.

Scotland will play the Republic of Ireland on Tuesday.

They won't join England at the tournament in New Zealand and Australia if they lose.

The three top-seeded teams were given a bye to the finals of the World Cup after they finished runners-up in European qualification.

The other six teams, including Scotland and Wales, went into the one-legged semi-finals.

In the other semi-finals, Portugal defeated Belgium and will face Iceland.

Only two of the three winners of the play-off will qualify for the World Cup.

The inter-Confederation play-off will take place in New Zealand in February 2023 and the remaining team will have to play three games.

How do they separate the winners of the play offs?

They will be ranked according to qualifying performances and upcoming play-off results - the latter will see them receive three points for a win or one point if the win is achieved via a penalty shootout.

The Irish are almost certain to qualify if they win the final and Scotland is in a good position if they beat them.

Should Wales beat Switzerland, they'll enter the inter-Confederation play-offs.

If they win the final by two goals and Portugal or Scotland win the play-off final in a penalty shoot out, they will go through.

Bosnia-Herzegovina can't finish as a top-two play-off winner because they don't have enough time to make it to the inter-Confederation play-offs.

The inter-Confederation play-offs will feature 10 teams, including Chinese Taipei.
