The time of year when singles scramble to find a partner for the winter is called cuffing season. Even if it's just to have a warm body to cuddle when the weather outside is frightful, daters may be firing up their dating apps in order to find a special someone.

"Winter coating" is one of the trends to look out for according to experts at Inner Circle.

When people reach out to previous partners during cuffing season, it's called winter coating. As the temperature drops, winter coaters can get back in touch with old flames, but they are gone as soon as the snow starts to thaw.

More than half of the UK singles surveyed by Inner Circle said they had been contacted by an ex who wanted to reignite their relationship, but only 71 percent said it worked out. As the weather gets colder, more exes will come around.

Due to the cost-of-living crisis, the stakes for daters are higher in the years to come. According to Inner Circle, 41 percent of UK singles are less likely to date due to rising costs, which is in line with findings from LendingTree that Americans are less likely to date due to inflation as well.

"This year, with the pressure of costs going up and people cutting back on dates, there's the added risk of singles going back to old flings in the same way they dig out their old winter coat for the season," said Inner Circle's residentdating expert Crystal Cansdale With someone you've already established this dynamic with, winter coating offers the comfort of staying inside.

Winter coating seems appealing due to price hikes and desire to stay in. You won't have to meet someone new if an ex comes back into the picture. "Winter coating takes toxic cuffing season behavior to a new level and unless you're on the same page as the other person, it has to stop."

Cansdale says to have an upfront chat if you find yourself gettingcoated. Get out of dodge if you don't know what type of relationship you want. It's a good idea to have an uncomfortable conversation now so you don't have to.

Take things slowly. If someone wants to speed up the relationship, they will want out just as quickly. Cansdale warns against getting too comfortable if you've been in that situation before. The effort in the relationship needs to be reciprocated.

The winter is upon us and so are winter coaters. You won't be stuck in the cold if you prepare for them.
