In his new book, Michael Cohen warns that the US is in danger of losing its fight against fascists and that Donald Trump's presidency was just a preview of things to come.
The former president's time in office was described in Cohen's book as a practice run for future dictatorships.
"We are in danger of losing this country to fascists who are destroying our democracy and the rule of law and replacing it with something unseen since the dark days in Europe prior to World War II," he said.
Donald Trump was just practicing. If those who think like him are allowed to take control of this government, then we're all fucked, and my suffering will become the nation's suffering.
Trump was turned into a dangerous figure by Cohen.
"As I helped create this monster and let it out of its cage, I feel it is my moral duty, or if you prefer my penance, to make sure we re- cage the beast," he wrote.
Cohen said in his book that Trump was a mirror into the depths of government corruption.
He is the standard bearer for wannabe dictators. He said that he was the poster boy for the fascist movement.
The representative at the post-presidential press office did not reply immediately.
Tax evasion, campaign finance violations, and bank fraud were among the crimes Cohen pleaded guilty to. The New York Supreme Court disbarred him in February of 2019.
Cohen's new book gives insight into his time in prison and his work for Trump.
Since his release, Cohen has become an outspoken critic of Trump and commented on his legal troubles. He said he was selling t-shirts depicting Trump behind bars to celebrate the fall of Mussolini.
