Two men from Australia have been charged with paying bribes to get infrastructure contracts.

Police in Australia arrested the pair last month after a decade-long investigation.

The company that the men worked for has been accused of wrongdoing in South Asian countries.

They will face court on Tuesday and haven't responded to the charges.

The men arranged bribes of more than one hundred thousand dollars to government officials in Australia.

Police didn't name the two Sri Lankan projects that were the subject of the bribes.

An investigation involving authorities from the US, Canada, India and elsewhere led to the charges.

There could be more arrests and charges, according to the Agence Franais.

Detective Supt Helen Schneider said that corruption can have disastrous consequences.

The Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation was formed in 1949 to build an icon in Australia. It now employs 5,400 people in many countries.

The World Bank stopped the bidding for any of its contracts in India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

According to the World Bank, the company is suspected of making inappropriate payments in Sri Lankan and Bangladesh.

The allegations were not related to any Australian projects and the company would continue to strengthen its corporate integrity compliance programmes.

The country's worst economic crisis in history has led to protests this year.
