A University of Miami frat was closed Friday after a video surfaced of its members chanting about having sex with a dead woman.
I felt like my skin was crawling. A UM sister who did not attend the pool party but watched the video with her friends said it was terrible. The student didn't want her name used for her own protection.
The song, which is popular with fraternities across the country, is sexually explicit and revolting. The pool party was hosted by the Fraternity and was called "Adult Swim". There was a party in Coral Gables.
According to Heather Matthews, a spokeswoman for the national headquarters, the organization received information that students had violated policy and engaged in actions outside of the boundaries of the organization.
SigEp chapters are expected to provide a safe and supportive environment. It is the cornerstone of a positive Fraternity and university experience so we take that expectation seriously and hold our chapters to that standard.
She didn't say what policies or boundaries the brothers had broken or deviated from.
The UM spokeswoman wouldn't say if the pool party video led to the expulsion of the Fraternity. She did not respond to the Herald's questions about the video that UM received.
Since 1949, the university has had a chapter of sigma pli es. According to an article in the Miami Herald archives, the University of Miami's chapter of the organization was shut down for four years in 1993. She said she couldn't comment because the records only went back to 1998.
The first major off-campus party since the Pandemic was put together by the organization. The gathering was held at a large ranch-style home in the 7100 block of Southwest 62nd Street.
A neighbor called the police after it became rowdy. He lives across the street from a house that has a swimming pool and basketball court in the backyard. There was no one answering the door on Monday.
When he called the law, he said "Y'all need to shut this thing down because it's a madhouse" Girls were urinating in people's yards, the music was loud, and cars were blocking the street
A lot of cars come and go from the house. He thinks the house was sold to an investor who rents it out. The house is owned by a Wyoming company.
The people who hosted the party chanted a song about a woman dying while giving fellatio. Every now and then, we dig her up. Once we'll f--- her again.
One version of the song includes frat boys having sex with a woman while she is dying, then digging up her body and committing necrophilia, or having sex with a corpse.
The news was reported by the student newspaper at UM. The paper quoted a girl who attended the party as saying she noticed a white substance in their drinks and that they were being drugged.
The Coral Gables and University of Miami police said they were aware of the story, but had not been contacted about any possible wrongdoing.
A group of men holding cans and partying at the backyard of a house, with two giant inflatable slides and bounce houses, and an adult swim sign in the background. A member of a frat yells that they own the school.
The local chapter of the Fraternity was ordered to stop operating by the university after receiving a video. She said the tape was sent to the national headquarters. The national headquarters stopped the chapter on Friday.
We were very quick to move. The national organization contacted us after we got the video and shut down the chapter.
The UM senior vice president for student affairs, who partly oversees Greek life at the largest private university in South Florida, said in a statement that the Fraternity chapter violated university policy and participated in behavior that was inconsistent with the values and expectations of the university community.
Whitely wrote that they supported the decision to close the chapter.
The president of the Interfraternity Council at UM refused to comment.
The reaction on campus Monday afternoon ranged from "disgusting" to "gross" to "that is SigEp's notorious reputation," according to a group of six sigma and frat members who did not want to give their names for fear of repercussions. The Panhellenic Building is where most of UM's Greek organizations are located and they do not have houses.
There was no one answering the door on the second floor.
The report was written by Miami Herald staffers.
