Since the voice assistant wouldn't know if the person is your girlfriend, wife, mom, dad, or kid, users have to change their relationship settings. If you told the assistant to call my wife, it would call the right person.
The new card system of the Google Assistant will help simplify the process by making it easy to access from the contact's card. It can include the name of the person, their birthday, and the relationship just by telling the assistant first.

There is a newAssistant settings section in the contact sheet on your device. It would take you to the people page in your account, where you could add or change information.
