The UN General Assembly gathered for an emergency session on Monday just hours after Russia launched a deadly barrage of missiles across Ukraine, in a tense proxy battle between the two countries.

Several countries used the meeting as a platform to voice outrage over the bombardment, which killed at least 14 people and wounded dozens more.

The body prepares for a vote later this week on Russia's annexation of partially-occupied territories in Ukraine.

According to CNN, the initial gathering gave a clear insight into how the assembly is likely to vote.

The General Assembly overwhelmingly voted against Russia's attempt to conduct the annexation vote through a secret ballot. A total of one-hundred-and-seven countries voted in favor of having a public vote on the matter. Russia and China abstained from the vote, according to the outlet.

The New York Times reported that Sergiy Kyslytsya delivered emotional opening statements against Russia.

The hall is filled with the smell of smoldering human flesh when the Russian delegation enters the General Assembly.

According to CNN, Kyslytsya said that Russia had already killed members of his family.

The outlet reported that Russia's UN ambassador, Vasily Nebenzya, suggested that other nations were ganging up on Moscow.
