Festival of the Dead and Witches Ball, Salem, Massachusetts 

The epicenter of the witch trials of the 1600s is Salem, Massachusetts. It's fame has led people from all over to make the pilgrimage to this haunted spot every year.

Visiting Salem during October gives the town a chance to look into its past. You can take a candle-lit haunted tour of the city, visit the Witch Trials Memorial and the Salem Witch Museum, as well as attend the annual Witches Ball at the historic Hawthorne.

New Orleans can throw a party like no other place in the world, and the festivities aren't limited to February. The city is considered to be one of the most haunted in the country and Halloween is an important time to visit. It's a good time to hit the Quarter during October because of the spooky season.

The parade in New Orleans is known for its hand-crafted floats, costumed bands, dancers and even beads that are locallysourced. The annual Zombie Run is an event where zombies take to the streets in a zombie movie.

Rocky Horror Picture Show NYC and the Village Halloween Parade

If you head to any US city with an art-house movie theater in October, you'll find a live-action showing of the movie, complete with costumes, props, callbacks from the audience and a full in-house cast.

The birthplace of a country-wide phenomenon was New York City, where this take on the classic stage show and film began. On select dates around the city, you can join in the interactive fun with your own version of the Time Warp.

The Village Halloween Parade is renowned for its size and detail, and you can see giant puppets make their way through the neighborhood while costumed revelers jam to dozens of ambulatory bands playing music of all genres.

Sea Witch Festival, Rehoboth, Delaware  

You can celebrate Halloween with your seafaring brethren at the Sea Witch Festival if your vibe is nautical. Festivals include a parade and costume contest, but also ocean-inflected events like a haunted bonfire, coastal wildlife seminars, a trick or treat for kids on the beach and a scavenger hunt for the sea witch herself.
