A young man holds an Xbox controller playing a game on the screen.

Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft gaming, wanted to congratulate the team on their 25th anniversary. Could it be on the top shelf. Is it an XBOX streaming box?

I spy with my little eye.

The eagle-eyed Microsoft fanatics spotted something else, but Spencer was supposed to be posting to congratulate Fallout for its games. There was a small device in a picture of Spencer's shelf.

The XBOX was going back to the drawing board after the last we heard of it. The stick format may be on the way out.

The device seems to be similar to a short bar or box that connects to a TV through an HDMI port. We reached out to Microsoft for comment, but the company pointed to the official Xbox account, which said it was just an old prototype.

Even if the leak was not intentional, Microsoft is enjoying the free publicity. Spencer hides easter eggs on his shelf. He leaked the series on a livestream.

The speculation hasn't been deterred by that. Tom Warren, one of the senior editors at the Verge, claimed that the image was of the Keystone device. According to sources familiar with Microsoft's plans, the team is still working on its streaming device.

Before the Xbox team replied about the device being a prototype, Warren winked and nodded.

The name "Keystone" is related to Microsoft's streaming endeavors and the company plans to bring to market a device that uses the Xbox Game Pass subscription program exclusively. It was rumored that the company wanted to release a new device within a year. Even though the device seems to be in development, we don't think it will be ready in time.

If you go box-sized, you may be able to free up some space on a TV's crowdedHDMI ports. Some TV and movies are included in the media other than games. It could be very useful for charging controllers if the stick design for the box is eliminated. It will be interesting to see what Microsoft does to make cloud gaming stick after the end of Stadia.
