The president of the Los Angeles City Council resigned on Monday after it was revealed that she made racist remarks.

The Los Angeles Times reported that she made racist comments about the son of a councilman.

Bonin's son was described as a "monkey" by a local official.

According to the report, the conversation, which was taped and remained private for a while, sparked outrage and calls forMartinez to resign.

There are no excuses for my comments. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry," the statement was obtained by KTLA. I apologized to the people I hurt.

She resigned as the council's president. It is not clear if she is stepping down from her position as a city counselor.

The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education member became the city council president in 2019.
