There are no excuses for the comments she made in an audio recording that leaked online Saturday, according to a statement she made.

When they use racist language to deride other officials, including Mike Bonin, a white man, and his eight-year-old Black son, it took a turn.

The audio, which was first posted to a forum before being shared by the Los Angeles Times, claims that Bonin treats his son like an accessory and that he uses the phrase "parece changuito."

Since the audio was released, there have been calls to step down from across Los Angeles, including from protesters demonstrating outside her home and from Bonin, who along with his spouse, Sean, said he was "appalled, angry and absolutely disgusted" by her comments.

After the Los Angeles Times published an article about the tape, she apologized for her comments and said she had let herfrustration and anger get the best of her.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the conversation took place a year ago, but it only leaked over the weekend before the Los Angeles elections.
