It was very similar to working with Bryan. It was so...sweet, and innocent, and beautiful. I love that it allows Jane to give Jesse, really, the best advice he could ever receive. He learned from her: Look, you have to create your own destiny and run with it.
In general, El Camino is such a Breaking Bad reunion. Were there any characters who don't appear that you wish Jesse could have had another scene with?Oh, man. I mean...everyone, you know? I love everybody. I love all of those characters. They're just so rich and beautiful. But Vince wrote such a well-constructed story that, after reading the script, I just couldn't imagine anyone else in it. Everyone had a purpose. Some had more screen time than others, but I thought it was all so...you know, every character is so delicately placed.
Let's talk about security. It's pretty remarkable that everyone managed to keep the production of a Breaking Bad sequel movie a secret for so long. What's the closest you came to getting caught? You know what? To be honest, I thought it was going to be an issue that I was filming in Albuquerque for three months. I thought especially when Bryan and I were at that diner, with the giant RV outside.
And shooting a scene together in a room filled with extras.Well, the extras were not a problem. All the background players were crew members, or family of crew members. It was really important to everybody involved that we keep this film a secret-but especially this scene between Walt and Jesse a secret. So we had to surround ourselves with loved ones we could trust.
People must ask you about Breaking Bad all the time. Did you ever come close to slipping? It was so easy to keep it a secret. I love secrets. I love surprises. The last thing I want to do is spoil the surprise. I love lying to people, in the harmless way. It's great. I think it's a fun thing. Even after the film was in the can, people would say, "Look, are any of those rumors about possibly revisiting the Breaking Bad universe true?" And I'd go, "You know, rumors are so funny. I'm hearing these rumors. I haven't read a script. If Vince wants to go into that world again with me, I would, of course, jump at the chance. I love that man." And that was it.
What was it like when the news finally broke? We started going off the rails just before we made the announcement. People just assumed, "Oh, it must be public knowledge that the film is done." And it very, very much was not. It was quite the opposite. So we were kind of forced to make an announcement. But I'm happy we did when we did, because it allowed people to start getting excited about it.
And then there was the whole firestorm around the teases for Dos Hombres, the mezcal line you co-founded with Bryan Cranston, which some people assumed was a tease for a Breaking Bad sequel.I mean, we were posting photos of ourselves, not in character. Us, like, walking in a river in Mexico. Those characters don't go to Mexico, you know? And Walt is dead. [Laughs.] And I don't have any of my Jesse Pinkman tattoos on. People were just...wishful thinking. And I respect that, and I love that. It shows you the excitement of this show, and the possibility of a movie or a new season was always looming in the distance for these hardcore fans.
