House of the Dragon has a tendency to stop in a certain period for a single week with each new episode. The same question is asked when we leap forward.
Viserys is alive and well.
After this week's episode, watch the next one.
It seems like 16 years ago, Viserys was getting sick with an unknown disease that gave him open sores and caused him to waste away while his brother, Daemon, didn't seem to age. After this latest time skip, another six years added onto the decade before that, he's literally the walking dead, barely able to stand, covered in sores, half his face dissolved so you can see through to his skull. He's still alive. Or actually lived. His final breaths came at the end of the show.
No matter what you think of House of the Dragon, Paddy Considine's nuanced performance as Viserys is easily one of its highlights, and last night it was buried under eight hours of makeup and greenscreen to create the zombie. Viserys arrived last night to preside over the debate over the succession of Driftmark. In a powerful scene that has him almost crawling to the Iron Throne, he pulls himself out of bed to side with his daughter in declaring his illegitimate grandsons legitimate heirs. An amazing moment for a person.
He ended his life by telling Alicent bits and pieces of the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy, which indicated to her that her son, Aegon, was the prince that was promised. Since there are 50 Targaryens named Aegon, this misunderstanding will lead to war between the different parts of the family. It seems like it would have happened anyways, given the boys.
Considine's performance as a decaying Viserys since the beginning of the show deserves some praise. Given the ensemble nature of the series, he would likely be nominated for the Best Supporting actor award, though he would likely be fighting off a few Succession actors. Last year, the nominees were here.
He deserves to be on next year's list, even though he won. If you don't win it in a single way. The Succession guys will get more chances.
Even if he didn't give any statues, it was an absolute performance from Considine. Viserys will stand the test of time as one of the best- performing characters in the series.
