Production of electric R1T pickup trucks at Rivian plantProduction of electric Rivian R1T pickup trucks on April 11, 2022 at the company’s plant in Normal, Ill.

The electric vehicle maker said late on Friday that it is recalling over 12,000 vehicles because of a problem with the steering bolt.

Shortly after the US markets opened on Monday, the stock was down more than seven percent.

The recall includes every Rivian R1T pickup and R1S SUV made through late September, as well as some of the EDV delivery vans the company produced for Amazon.

Rivian had built 15,300 vehicles by the end of the month. By the end of the year, the company wanted to produce 25,000 vehicles.

There is a defect in the front suspension of some vehicles. Rivian said that the alignment of the front wheels could be affected if the fastening isn't tight.

Rivian said that in rare instances, the fastening could come loose and lead to a loss of steering control.

From time to time, almost all of the cars are recalled. The numbers involved in Rivian's have investors worried.

While auto recalls are routine and this one isn't likely to be expensive, Rivian is under a bright spotlight and further quality or production issues may hurt the company's standing with investors.

Rivian's eye is a black eye.

Rivian said that it is aware of seven issues that could be related to the rivet. There are no injuries associated with the defect.

If necessary, Rivian's service centers will tighten the bolts. Repairs will be completed in 30 days.

Rivian has a lot of cash and the cost of the recall won't affect it. The company had more money on hand at the end of the second quarter than any of its competitors.

Since the beginning of the year, Rivian's shares have plummeted.
