Buying points is a great way to shore up your balance, or buy a trip at a cheaper price than you would pay to stay at a hotel with cash. Don't do this in a speculative way. You should always use for the points immediately. Buying them for a trip down the road isn't a good idea.

If you don't have points in your account, it's worth buying what you need to top up your free night to get the points you need for redemption If you want to add a fifth night for a 4 night reservation, this could be useful.
You would have enough for 4 nights if you had enough Ihg points with you. If you wanted to stay 5 you could have your free night certificate in your account. With this deal, you would be paying $150 for 30k Ihg points, but you could top it up with 30k Ihg points.
You will be able to top-up at the annual anniversary award night if you choose to do so. This can be used to stay at properties up to 40k. When you have a stand alone night, you have to pay for a night to go with it, but soon you will be able to combine it with any booking and top up the difference from 40k. Buying points can help offset cost and make better use of your night, since you are more likely to plan a longer stay if you can offset cost.
