The Chinese government appreciated Musk's suggestion that Taiwan should be like Hong Kong.
During an interview with the Financial Times, Musk proposed a solution to the China- Taiwan conflict.
He said that the idea probably won't make everyone happy, but that it was possible that Taiwan could have an arrangement that was less strict than Hong Kong.
Taiwan has seen itself as an independent country for a long time, but Beijing wants to regain control of the island.
"Actually, Peaceful reunification and One Country, Two Systems are our basic principles for resolving the Taiwan question," said the ambassador to the US.
Taiwan will enjoy a high degree of independence if China's interests are guaranteed after reunification.
The Foreign ministry spokeswoman backed up her statements to reporters on Sunday.
If national sovereignty, security, and development interests are assured, Taiwan can adopt a high degree of autonomy.
The Chinese government appeared to disagree with Musk's statements. The Taiwan issue was referred to as "China's domestic politics" in an answer to a question about Musk's comments.
Insider's request for comment from representatives for Musk was not immediately responded to.
In the past, Musk has weighed in on international politics.
The billionaire was criticized last week for suggesting that Ukraine should give up land to Russia.
Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, made fun of Musk with a poll on his website.
