Key Background

After a series of losses on the battlefield and Saturday's purported attack on the Crimea bridge, the latest attack on civilian targets across Ukranian is a sign of a major escalation by Russia. In a statement on Sunday, Putin said that the blast which damaged the only bridge connecting Russia with Crimea was an act of terrorism. The strike on the bridge was symbolic as it connected the annexed Ukrainian peninsula with Russia and was associated with Putin as a leader.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said Beijing hopes the situation will calm down soon. China has become more upset about the invasion. Ahead of Russia annexing occupied Ukrainian territories, China urged respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries. During a meeting with Putin last month, China's president raised questions and concerns about the invasion.

Multiple Ukrainian cities have been hit by explosions.
