The explosion may have been timed to coincide with Russian President Putin's 70th birthday. The Washington Post reported that the bridge was a proud symbol of his annexation of the peninsula.

A new stamp that says "Crimean Bridge - Done" will be issued by the postal service.

A picture of the bridge on fire was posted by the Republic of Crimea on the social networking site.

Immediately after the explosion, Putin asked for an investigation to be launched, and his allies called for swift retaliation.

There was "no doubt" that the explosion was an act of terrorism, according to Putin.

Putin said that the Ukrainian special services ordered the creation of it.
