Japanese Grand Prix: Max Verstappen seals second world title amid confusion after Suzuka win

The Japanese Grand Prix was truncated by heavy rain after Max Verstappen dominated.

Verstappen headed Perez in a Red Bull one-two after Leclerc was given a 10-second time penalty for cutting the track.

There was confusion after the race as to whether Verstappen had done enough to tie up the title, because it was not immediately clear whether full points would be awarded for a race that ran just over half distance.

If a race can't be resumed, reduced points only apply.

Verstappen asked if he was sure when he was told he was champion.

The protocol was left out of the rules when they were rewritten after the Belgian Grand Prix, when no racing took place.

After Verstappen secured his 12th victory of the season in the same manner as he has taken control of the championship, there is no question about the validity of his title.

While cars were running after a crash on the first lap, officials deployed a recovery vehicle on to the track.

Eight years after Jules Bianchi lost his life after crashing into a tractor on a track, drivers and team bosses came together to condemn the decision from race control.

After the race was stopped, officials waited for the rain to stop so they could restart it.

When it finally happened, Verstappen and Leclerc initially pulled away from the rest of the pack, but as the laps went by, their lead was cut in half.

Leclerc dropped back from Verstappen and Perez was able to grab the car. Leclerc held him off for several laps and looked to have done enough, but he locked up at the last chicane and cut the corner.

Perez was demoted back behind after Leclerc went off track and gained an advantage.

Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes was held off the track by Alpine's Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso's Alpine.

With just 15 minutes left in the race, Alonso made a stop for fresh tires and dropped to ninth, but he was still able to finish the race on top of the field.

Mercedes' George Russell climbed up to eighth from 13th after being delayed by being stacked behind Hamilton in the pits when the field changed from wet to intermediate tires.
