A woman holds a lightsaber at NYCC

There are a lot of glowing tubes on the New York Comic Con show floor. Everyone at NYCC wants a lightsaber that looks and sounds like the one from the movies and shows.

This goes beyond the movies. I have seen young men in cosplay hold up their wands. I saw a glowing space stick on the shoulder of a young lady dressed as a video game character. They light the faces of both young and old when they are set aglow in bright colors.

Most of the lightsabers that were brought in from outside were traced back to a booth at the back of the show. The quality and price of lightsabers vary. The Ultrasabers booth at NYCC was the only real option for attendees to get their hands on a lightsaber with enough oomph to take a hit. The new toys are a step up from the old ones on Walmart shelves.

Emory Harris, the owner of Ultrasabers, stands in front of the busy booth at New York Comic Con.

The owner of Ultrasabers talked with i09 about why he thinks they are doing well in the NYCC. He got into the business of designing sabers due to his computer science and engineering background and a love of Star Wars.

NYCC has been pulling sales in the top three of those they have been invited to since they were invited last year. The edge has been given to them by the fact that they have their sabers on display, and that they will create one for customers based on their desired components. The owner said that most of their sales are online. It is only our second year, but we have a large fan base.

Disney has a build-a-lightsaber experience at both Disney World and Disneyland. Fans have tried to come up with different designs of sabers. Solid-built models are often used in the world of recreating Star Wars fight scenes.

Why have lightsabers become so popular in NYCC, and what makes them so appealing? Based on the crowd, the answer is clear. Everybody wants to feel themselves with the noble bearing of a Jedi or the calculated viciousness of a Sith. In the hours I spent on the show floor, I didn't see anyone swinging around their big space sword, something that points to the fact that people at NYCC are used to using civility.

Harris doesn't want to talk about why people love Star Wars and lightsabers. He said that it was a living being of its own. We will continue to sell them as long as people like them.
