Two young children are dead and their mother is in a coma after two family dogs attacked a baby and toddler outside their West Tennessee home.

The family's Memphis-area home was the site of a mauling on Thursday.

The family of Kirstie Bennard told USA TODAY Saturday that she was critically injured when she tried to intervene in the attack on her two children.

Bennard's uncle said that she put her body on top of Lilly to protect her from the attackers. The dogs attacked her while she lay on Lilly.

When officials arrived at the home, they found the two children dead.

The mother was in a critical condition.

She has left the hospital.

Colby Bennard was not home at the time of the attack.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the attack.

According to John Morris, the public information officer for the sheriff's office, the case was still ongoing and active. He didn't say if charges had been filed in the case.

It lasted about 10 minutes.

On Friday, he posted a link to a raise money for the family.

The dogs were put down at Memphis Animal Services.
