With autumn's melange of colors, embarking upon a rail adventure can be the perfect way to get a glimpse of the leaves.

There are some fascinating rail journeys for admiring fall foliage and visiting charming fall destinations in Europe.

Domodossola, Italy, to Locarno, Switzerland, on the Foliage Train

The Foliage Train is the perfect train for an autumn adventure. The Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway runs the route between Italy and Switzerland.

The route weaves through wooded, mountainous scenery just north of the Monte Mottac State Reserve, passing hilltop villages and fertile valleys, and crossing over 83 bridges in two hours. Locarno is located on the banks of Lake Maggiore and is a quaint Swiss town.

Adult one-way tickets start at 33 euro and include an optional stop at any of the charming villages the train runs through. The train doesn't run during the summer.

Munich to Fussen, Germany, on the Deutsche Bahn

You can sip a stein of beer or some warming mulled wine on the way to Fussen, which is two hours away.

The first part of the trip is fairly standard, but once you get to the foot of the Bavarian Alps, you'll find a lot more to see. You can take a bus, catch a taxi or walk through the woods for about an hour to get to the castle.

Fort William to Mallaig, Scotland, on the West Highland Line

The West Highland Line is one of the most beautiful train routes in the world. The five-hour journey is breathtakingly beautiful, passing through some of the most beautiful places in the world.

One of the highlights of the trip is the 1 1/2 hour stretch between Fort William and Mallaig. You may be able to identify it from the movies. The train crossed it.

For the entire journey from Glasgow to Mallaig, one-way ticket prices start at $32 and go as low as 7.80 pounds.

Madrid to Aranjuez, Spain, on the Strawberry Train

The suburb of Aranjuez is famous for it's large palace and delicious strawberries.

There is an antique 1960s train that leaves from the tracks in Madrid. It takes about an hour to go on the ride. You can go through the Manzanares Valley once you leave Madrid. It is fun to see the landscape change as summer ends and fall begins.

On weekends at 10 a.m. the train goes to Aranjuez and returns to Madrid at 6:30 p.m.

Adult tickets include strawberries on your return trip. The Royal Palace and its gardens can be purchased in packages.

Dombas to Andalsnes, Norway, on the Rauma Line

One of the most beautiful train journeys in Norway is one hour and 40 minutes. After traversing jagged peaks and Norwegian villages, it ends up in the fjord of Andalsnes.

One of the only parts of the "Harry Potter" movies shot outside of the UK was filmed on this railway. One of the highlights is crossing over the Rauma River on the Kylling Bridge. When you get to Andalsnes, hop off the train and walk to the Romsdalen Gondola station.

Each one-way ticket on the Rauma Line costs around 18 dollars.

The SNCF train runs through the French Pyrenees on a route filled with impressive scenery, ranging from wooded pastures to small French hamlets.

A train crosses a number of structures before arriving at a town in northern Spain. If you hop off the train, you can either walk across the border to Spain or take a train to Barcelona.

Prices are available on the SNCF. Due to track construction, there might be limited trains this season.

St. Mortiz to Zermatt, Switzerland, on the Glacier Express

Although the name Glacier Express conjures up distinctly winter vibes, taking this Swiss route in autumn allows you to feast on the variety of colors along Switzerland's tree-covered slopes.

Some of the best views are between Andermatt and Disentis on the ride. One of the most well-known peaks in the Swiss Alps is the Matterhorn.

The train runs through October but takes a break in November before restarting in the winter. In second class and first class, one-way ticket prices are around 180 pounds and 200 pounds, respectively, which offers a more spacious seating layout and upgraded service.
