Apple is rumored to be developing its own 5G chip for future iPhones, but the supplier of the modem for the current models is expected to remain, suggesting that Apple's chip won't debut until at least 25 years from now.
Jeff Pu said in a research note on Friday that he expects the next iteration of the iPhone to use a modem from Qualcomm. The X75 is expected to be manufactured using the same process as the X70 and will contribute to power efficiency improvements.
The exclusive supplier of 5G modems for new iPhone models in 2023 was indicated by an analyst in June. When he said that Apple would continue to develop its own 5G chip, he didn't say when the chip would be ready for use in the iPhone.
The four iPhone 15 models are expected to be equipped with the new modem. The X70 theoretically supports up to 10 Gbps download speeds, with newly added artificial intelligence capabilities for faster average speeds, improved coverage, better signal quality, lowerlatency, and up to 60% improved power efficiency.
The switchover to Apple's own 5G modem may take at least a few years longer than initially thought.
