A Texas police officer who shot and wounded a teenager who was sitting in his car eating a hamburger has been terminated.
The police training commander said in a video statement that the officer who shot Cantu was fired.
Brennand had responded to an unrelated incident at the fast-food restaurant when he saw the Cantu inside the car.
The prosecutor in Texas did not see enough evidence to charge the teenager.
The facts and evidence we have received so far led us to reject the charges against Cantu.
Brennand violated his training and police procedures when he approached the car.
The officer opened the driver's door and ordered the driver out of the car before the backup officers arrived.
Cantu struck the officer with the open door after looking toward Brennand while holding a hamburger.
Brennand opened fire as the door closed.
Cantu, who was struck by gunfire, stopped near where he and a passenger were found by police.
The police chief can't defend the officer's actions. There was some contact, but that did not justify the shooting.
Cantu had been charged with evading police and assault.
There was no decision on whether to charge Brennand pending the outcome of the police investigation.
All officer-involved shootings that result in death or serious injury will be submitted to a grand jury. We can't say anything else until that happens.
The police and Cantu's lawyer didn't return calls on Friday.
