President Donald Trump will get some of the documents the Justice Department seized at Mar-A-Lago, the special master reviewing the documents ordered Friday, though they are limited to documents that aren't privileged or government materials.
Raymond Dearie, the third-party special master reviewing the documents seized at Mar-A-Lago, ordered Friday for some original documents to be returned to Trump by October 10.
The DOJ's Filter Team, which sorted out potentially privileged materials before Dearie was appointed, offered to give the materials back to Trump on August 30.
The judge used the non-governmental documents as a reason for the special master to be appointed.
In the filing, the DOJ said that the documents do not appear to be privileged and do not appear to be classified.
There are documents related to various Trump-related lawsuits, accounting and tax documents, and a confidential settlement agreement between the PGA and Trump Golf, among others.
Cannon ruled that Trump's interest in the seized documents that justified a special master going through them was harmed by being deprived of potentially significant personal documents.
More than 10, 000. Only a small portion of what the government had in its possession was returned to Trump. Some of the documents marked classified had the highest top- secret designation.
As part of Dearie's review, the DOJ and Trump's attorneys are looking at other materials to see if they are covered by attorney-client privilege or executive privilege. A status conference as part of Dearie's review will be held on October 18.
On August 8th, the DOJ searched Mar-A-Lago as part of its investigation into whether Trump violated federal law by bringing White House documents back to Florida with him. Cannon named Dearie to oversee the review after Trump asked a judge to appoint a special master. In addition to the materials Dearie ordered to be returned, Trump has said the DOJ took multiple passports of his from Mar-A-Lago, which the DOJ has already returned to him. According to multiple news outlets, the Justice Department believes that Trump may not have turned over all the classified documents.
