Ramirez's 2-run dinger puts the Guardians ahead (0:42)

Jose Ramirez hit a two-run home run to give the Guardians a lead. There is a time and a place.

2:46 PM ET

In the wild-card opener on Friday, Jose Ramirez hit a two-run home run, the Cleveland Guardians played with a lot of confidence, and the young pitchers did a great job.

The Cleveland Indians ended an eight-game playoff losing streak with a sixth-inning home run by Ramirez that gave them a one-game lead in the best-of-five American League Division Series.

After getting four outs for his first save in the playoffs, Clase finished the game in just 17 minutes. The Cleveland closer had 42 saves in the regular season.

TheRays dropped their sixth straight game overall and must win Game 2 on Saturday to have a chance in the next game. The winner of the series will play the Yankees in the division series.

The Guardians didn't have playoff experience after 17 players made their MLB debut. They both came through for the American League Central champion.

TheGuardians, who played small ball all season to win an unexpected division title, leaned on power for this win

Ramirez delivered when Cleveland ran out of outs and was down 0-1.

Ramirez, a four-time All-Star who finished second in the American League in batting this season, hit a 2-0 changeup over the wall for his second home run of the playoffs.

Kevin Cash appealed if Rosario missed second as the fans waved red towels. Ramirez slowed and touched the bag.

The crowd spontaneously sang "Jose" while the umpires waited. The man is named Jose. Ramirez popped out for a curtain call after Jose said like never before. Cleveland had a small lead after the home run.

The first hit allowed by the pitcher in the sixth was a solo home run by Siri. After flying out to deep center in his first at-bat, he hit a solo home run in the third.

Harold Ramirez hit a single into center in the fifth to give the team its first hit of the game. After getting two outs, the right-handed pitcher struck out Christian Bethancourt, who had been hit by a pitch.

He tried to return by clapping into his glove, but he was booed.

In last year's ALDS against Boston, he pitched five no-hitters in the first two games. After giving up five runs and recording only two outs, he took out his anger on a chair in the tunnel.

His only appearance in the playoffs was disappointing. In the wild card game in 2020, when he won the American League Cy Young Award, he was tagged for seven runs in just 4 1/3 frames. Judge hit a two-run home run.

It's time to wake up.

Terry Francona drove his scooter from his downtown residence to the ballpark at 6 a.m. Six hours before the first pitch the streets were empty.

A creature of habit, Francona wanted to get in a pre-game swim.

Some players were knocked off their routines due to the early start.

"I am not a morning person," said the starter of the second game. I woke up with lots of energy.

It's up next.

Tyler Glasnow will be on a pitch count in his third start. His last start was in the World Series. After throwing 64 pitches in his last outing, Cash will add one or two more pitches to the workload of the left-handed pitcher. In the playoffs, he's 0-7 with a 6.56ERA.

His first start is in the playoffs. In his last six starts, the tall right-handed pitcher went 2-0 with a 2.09 earned run and 41 strikeouts.
